Volksweg is a Dutch word meaning “people’s path,” and this unique trail serves as a path connecting the picturesque city of Pella to the recreation areas of Lake Red Rock. The section of trail linking Pella to the lake is parallel to, but separate from, the county road. After reaching Howell Station Campground at Lake Red Rock, the trail follows the Des Moines River and winds through the North Overlook Woods. The trail continues along the north side of the lake to the Fifield Recreation Area. The trail traverses timbered areas, restored prairies, pine plantations and open fields, and offers spectacular views of Lake Red Rock. Eagles are frequently seen in the tailwater area below the dam throughout the winter months. Recreational opportunities at the lake include picnicking, camping, hiking, swimming and boating.
